I get asked this questions a lot from businesses in Zimbabwe…
What is SEO and why does my website need it?
For years I have been building websites for businesses in Zimbabwe and I have very rarely been asked the questions… “Can you get my website higher in the search results of Google.”
I have come to the conclusion that business in Zimbabwe don’t rely on the search engines to generate them leads for their businesses. They still rely on offline marketing and social media to get their brand to customers.
There is a reason for this train of thought…
Zimbabwe is still so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to the internet and the customers and businesses use it for searches.
How the rest of the world works
One of the first jobs of a new business starting out is to get a website to showcase their services to customers who might be interested. They will work on getting their website seen for specific keywords in the search engines and that is done in a few different ways:
- Business directories
- Google Maps
- Local SEO
- Display advertising
- Guest posts
- Press releases
- and the list goes on…
By doing this, that business is giving them the best chance to be found by potential customers.
Businesses who have been around for a few years will understand that importance of being seen online and they will continually be working to improve their visibility in the search engines.
They will employ someone or hire a company to be constantly updated, creating and improving their online presence.
How Zimbabwean businesses work
Websites are becoming part of their business marketing but it is used differently. The website URL will be displayed on:
- Newspaper Ads
- all offline marketing
Google and SEO are not the focal points of the business marketing departments and this is because, in my opinion, they do not understand the value.
Zimbabwe search results
If you have done any searches using Google.co.zw, you will see that there is no real order in the search results.
A lot of the top results are spam from business directories offering no real information and covered with Google Ads and other display advertising enticing them to click through so the business directories can generate online revenue.
With the search results filled with content that is not helpful to the searcher, of course, they will revert back to off line as they can control what they are seeing and they will be able to find the information that they are looking for.
Time to capitalise
If the rest of the world is any to go by, the internet is going to be a very important place for your business to be seen.
It is imperative that businesses start looking at Googe and other search engines as marketing avenues that they need to focus on and get their websites seen for their main keywords.
Searches using keywords is starting to happen and it will only increase to a point that it will be the main area when people will look for businesses.
The longer you wait, the harder it will be to optimise your website for your keywords because your competitors will be dominating the search results and it will mean you will lose income.
